RECAP OF LAST YEARS PROGRAM
-
We started the program in April of 08, by forming a board of directors. We held board meetings, and conducted the business of The BIZ KIDS of Coquille. In our workshops we developed personal budgets by assuming each member was 20 years old, just got their first job and was living alone in an apartment. We spend a few workshops caculating exactly how much money they would have to earn to be able to pay bills, buy food and pay rent, etc.
-
Once we knew what that cost would be and how much was needed in each of many catagories, Sterling Savings Bank provided us with practice check books. Each participant was given a check book and over several workshops. The kids were given sample paychecks, sample bills and learned how to write checks, make deposits, maintain the current balance and reconcile the check book after returned checks were given to them at the end of the month. Arrangements have been made with the manager of Sterling Bank to come talk to the kids about banking, what jobs are available, what classes they need to take, etc. This was both a successful and rewarding activity.
-
This October, Sterling Savings Bank will be giving a presentation about banking, the jobs avaiable in a bank and what classes would be good to take for those interested in working in the banking industry.
-
We also started spending time in the computer lab, learning key boarding, and the programs of Microsoft Office Suite. This activity flowed over as a summer program. This helped us to develop the New After School Computer Club who meets every Tuesday that school is in session in the CVS computer lab starting at 2:45 PM until 4:00 PM. This program is open to all CVS students.

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY BECOME INVOLVED?
Our approach is unique to Coquille as it will allow recruited/ qualified volunteers from the Coquille community to be the ones to deliver much of the curriculum while also sharing their experiences and suggestions with students. This will embody the heart of Coquille allowing our business owners, workers and community volunteers to transform the key concepts of their lessons into a message that inspires and empowers our participants to believe in themselves, showing them they can make a difference in their community and indeed the world.

Individual Volunteers
Our continual search is underway to find volunteers from the community who are willing to come into the afterschool classrooms and share a variety of business related information and experiences with the team.
-
It also includes finding individual adults who are willing to serve as consulting members and help develop and run the BK program or specific programs that enhances their talents, skills, and experience.
We are also in need of a web site editor that can double check our spelling, use of punctionation and grammer.
